The imaginary part of the complex exponential function, \(z = e^{x} \sin y\), oscillates in \(y\) and grows exponentially in \(x\). When we stand on the \((x, y)\)-plane to the left of the origin and look rightward through fog, the oscillations loom before us like an infinite procession of cliffs and canyons.
